EndNote: Add reference manually

Help page for EndNote bibliographic management software

  1. Open your EndNote Library
  2. Click New References from References menu
  3. Select References Type (e.g., book, book section, journal article, Web page,...) from  the drop-down menu
  4. Enter each field as required by the desired writing style

Add references manually

  • You don't have to fill out all the fields
  • Don't apply any formatting at all (e.g,. bold, italic, ...) just enter plain text
  • Enter each author on a new line. EndNote can interpret names in Last name, First name or First name Last name format. Be sure to enter one name per line.
  • End corporate author name with a comma (e.g., Belmont University,)
  • Author term in red means it is new. As you type, EndNote will suggest authors to you
  • Year needs to enter a 4-digit number
  • Use Date field for month
  • Page number can be entered as a range or truncated (e.g., 112-119 or 112-9)

Best Practices

EndNote is best used as a software with the Microsoft Word App/Desktop Version. To use EndNote most effectively, we recommend:

  • Begin a document in Word online in OneDrive

  • Close the online document and open it in the Word App/Desktop version on your desktop

  • Use the Word App/Desktop version to utilize EndNote's Cite While You Write feature
