Scholarly Research Impact

Journal Metrics in Belmont Libraries

Scopus includes:

  • CiteScore: Measures average citations received per document published in the journal.
  • SCImago Journal Rank (SJR): Measures weighted citations received by the journal. Citation weighting depends on subject field and prestige of the citing journal.
  • Source Normalized Impact per Page (SNIP): Measures actual citations received relative to citations expected for the journal’s subject field.

Cabell's Directories includes:

  • scite Index: Measures how supported publications from a journal are by looking at the context, dividing supporting cites by supporting cites + contrasting cites. There must be at least 100 cites in the measured time period to receive an SI.
  • Altmetrics SnapshotIncludes count of mentions outside of scholarly publications
  • Acceptance rate for some journals

Other Journal Metrics

Journal Metrics to be aware of, outside of the Belmont Libraries access:

  • Journal Impact Factor (JIF) from Clarivate Journal Citation Reports is commonly used. JIF is a 3-year calculation based on the total number of citations to articles published in the journal.
  • Eigenfactor can also be found in Clarivate Journal Citation Reports, but is less commonly used than the JIF. Like the JIF, Eigenfactor is essentially a ratio of number of citations to total number of articles, but eliminates self-citations from the calculation and weights each reference according to a stochastic measure of the amount of time researchers spend reading the journal.
