What is OpenAthens?
An authentication method that was designed specifically for libraries and provides easy access to library resources, particularly off-campus.
Why is Belmont now using OpenAthens?
We are now using OpenAthens to increase security and allow us more control over user access. OpenAthens will allow us to better support our colleges and programs by streamlining access issues and giving us the flexibility to negotiate more cost-effective pricing for library resources.
What has changed?
All library links, including the ones used in Canvas.
What has stayed the same?
Your experience as a user is the same. You will continue to use your MyBelmont SSO to access library materials. There is no change to the login method or username/password or method of logging in. If you are already using resources that use special login credentials, you will continue using those. If you have registered for personal accounts on a particular database platform, those will not be affected.
If you are given the following option, please choose based on your user group:
What does this mean for faculty?
Any links you used previously in Canvas, assignment sheets, emails, documents, web browser bookmarks, etc. will no longer work. They will need to be updated with OpenAthens links.
What does this mean for students?
Any library links you may have previously shared in a document or email or bookmarked in your web browser will no longer work. They will need to be updated with OpenAthens links.
