Reading and Evaluating Journal Articles

There are many different ways to read and evaluate journal articles. Your professors or mentors may have specific methods they want you to use. You can also find strategies online, including the REACT method, outlined below. Here are some other resources for reading journal articles:

Expertise Who wrote this article?
Are there any areas of expertise missing?
Author Information, Abstract
Approach What type of article is this?
What was the population and number of participants?

Clarity What did the researchers “do” to or try to find out about their population?
What happened as a result of what they did, or what did they find out?
Results, Discussion, Conclusion

Writing a Literature Review: Guiding Questions

Guiding Questions  Notes/potential themes from these questions  Articles/sources that could help answer this question
What broad concepts does my research include?
What is my population? How has my population been studied before in this context?
Are there statistics related to my population or another area of my research?
What am I “doing” to this population? What is my intervention, phenomenon or problem to solve?
Have other researchers done what I am doing to a different population?
Have any similar/identical interventions or problems been identified?
What method am I using to collect data? Has this method been used before? On this population?
What are the potential outcomes of my research? How will those outcomes affect understanding of the broader concepts that my research fits into?
Are there any gaps in the research that I’ve identified? How does my research fill those gaps?
