Writing a PICO Question

Writing a PICO Question (Accessible Version)

Who are your people? What group or population are you focused on? Why does that group matter? This will become your population

  • Example: nurses in the ED

What are your people's problem? Why do these people need an intervention? What data have you seen? This problem will affect your outcome.

  • Example: workplace violence

What is the current approach to this problem? This is often no intervention, a different intervention, or the standard of care. This will become your comparison.

  • Example: no intervention

What is the new, novel, or nursing approach to this problem? What are you trying to do to fix the problem? What is your innovation? This will become your intervention.

  • Example: behavioral response team

Putting It All Together: For healthcare professionals in the ED, does the implementation of a behavioral response team reduce workplace violence incidents, as opposed to no intervention?
